Chief Operating Officer (COO), Sweden

Location IconSweden

Meva Energy offers its customers a technology that significantly reduces fossil greenhouse gas emissions and lowers the overall climate footprint of their industrial operations.

The business was founded in Sweden and has created an innovative modular gasification technology to generate renewable, synthetic gas that can be used as a low-carbon substitute for fossil-based natural gas within manufacturing sectors, for example paper, metallurgy, wood products and other energy consuming industries. Their compact and modular gasification plants are strategically located at customer’s sites where energy is consumed. This decentralised approach minimises transport costs and emissions, promotes energy independence and enhances flexibility to meet specific industrial needs.

Meva Energy offers both Energy Purchase Agreements (EPA) as well as turnkey solutions. Under their EPA model, Meva Energy build, own and operate the renewable energy plants directly at the customer site and the customer simply purchases the energy it generates without the need for upfront investment and operational burden.

Meva Energy’s technology converts solid biomass (either waste produced on-site or sourced independently) into a clean, energy-rich biogas, primarily composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. In parallel, the process produces biochar, a stable carbon-rich by-product. The gas is used directly by their customers to replace fossil gas in industrial processes. It can also be converted into electricity or combined heat and power via a generator. The biochar serves as a soil enhancer, a permanent carbon sink, or a fossil carbon substitute in metallurgical applications.

Meva Energy’s vision:

We believe in a fossil free manufacturing industry where no biomass resources are wasted, and no fossil emissions are created.

The Role

Meva Energy are at a very exciting time in their development. Backed by several impact funds, they are currently at a pivotal scale-up/industrialization phase, moving away from being a pure R&D/product development company towards being an operational cleantech industrial entity with a growing commercial footprint. They are now recruiting a COO to lead this transition from an inventive R&D-driven company to a robust, process-oriented industrial operator, as it scales its commercial operations across Europe.

With proven technology, growing revenues, and multiple commercial plants in operation or development, Meva requires an experienced technical leader who can integrate and professionalise both product development and plant production teams. They will drive operational excellence, establish standardized systems and KPIs, and build organizational capacity.

Reporting to the CEO, the COO will have full operational responsibility for Meva Energy’s product development and plant operations. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the COO will take a lead role with focus on the realisation of the company’s core technology, its unique thermal gasification process, from early commercialization to full-scale industrial delivery.

The role involves managing the product development, engineering capabilities and the deployment of Meva’s proprietary gasification technology across multiple client sites, ensuring plant performance, cost efficiency, and continuous product improvements.

Key Responsibilities

Product & Technology Development

  • Lead Meva’s product development roadmap from first-of-a-kind commercial plant to standardized industrial deliveries, in collaboration with CTO and R&D teams.
  • Ensure systematic innovation and structured feedback loops from plant operations into product improvement.
  • Drive modularization, standardization, and documentation of technical solutions for scalability.
  • Prioritize development workstreams based on commercial needs and lifecycle cost impact.

Plant Execution & Operations

  • Establish and refine Meva’s execution model (EPC and EPCM), including quality, safety, and cost controls.
  • Implement robust O&M structures and performance monitoring for operating plants.
  • Own performance KPIs including uptime, availability, OEE, and lifecycle costs.

Operational Leadership

  • Develop and lead high-performing cross-functional teams across engineering, execution, and operations.
  • Implement and own internal management systems (QHSE, ERP, process governance) in line with company scaling.
  • Ensure alignment and integration between commercial and operational teams.

Strategic and Organizational Development

  • Support the CEO and board with long-term capacity planning and scaling of delivery capabilities.
  • Lead internal investment planning for tools, resources, and capabilities required for growth.
  • Represent Meva’s operational model in customer and partner interactions.

Focus Areas for First 12–18 Months

  • Scale product platform: Finalize industrial version of Meva’s gasification core and related modules.
  • Plant performance stabilization: Secure performance and learning feedback loops from IKEA and Elcowire plants.
  • Standardize project delivery: Introduce and institutionalize stage-gated execution methodology.
  • Build operations team: Recruit and develop a plant-focused operational delivery unit.
  • Management systems: Formalize processes, document ownership (process owners), and structure execution templates.

Direct reports: Heads of Engineering, Product Development, Plant Operations.

The Person

The ideal COO will bring people management strength, a background in complex process industries, and the ability to deliver high-performance, reliable plant operations while supporting further scale-up, customer delivery, and broader market impact.

Key Competencies

  • Proven track record in industrial operations, preferably in cleantech, energy or process industries.
  • Deep understanding of product development in hardware/process technology environments.
  • Strong leadership experience in scaling operations from prototyping to repeatable execution.
  • Excellent stakeholder management across technical, commercial, and delivery functions.
  • Structured, hands-on, execution-oriented leadership style.

The Opportunity

The COO role at Meva Energy is uniquely attractive because it offers the opportunity to play a central, strategic leadership role at a company transitioning from pioneering R&D to full-scale industrial operations in the high-impact, mission-driven cleantech sector. The successful candidate will join Meva at a critical inflection point, with proven commercial technology, major industrial clients (such as Sofidel and IKEA), and ambitious growth plans across Europe. As a key member of the executive team, the COO will have significant influence over both product development and plant operations, establishing robust, process-oriented systems and guiding the company as it builds standardized, scalable solutions for industrial decarbonization - making a direct and visible impact on climate change and clean energy adoption.

Additionally, the role offers a rare mix of technical and people leadership challenge, in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment backed by substantial institutional investors (like Just Climate). The COO will lead experienced teams, professionalize operations, and help shape company culture as Meva scales, with the chance to build out international operations and processes as the business expands.
